Improving Speaking Part 2 Fluency

Updated: Nov 11, 2021

A good way to improve your Speaking Fluency, especially for Part 2 of the IELTS test preparation is to record yourself while practicing. Select an IELTS Part 2 question and allow one minute to understand the question and make notes in preparation for your answer. Then start recording as you give your answer. Time how long you speak for. This should be for at least 1 minute 30 seconds up to the full 2 minutes. Don't start again just because you make a mistake! If you hear yourself make a mistake try and correct it and continue. After you have finished recording yourself, listen to the recording and ask yourself these questions.

"Did I speak for at least 1 minute and a half?"

"Were there any long pauses without speaking?"

"Did I answer all the parts (usually four) of the question?"

"Were there longer multi clause sentences or did I tend to use shorter single clause sentences while answering?"

Then try again with the same question, trying to improve your fluency!

You can also try the same thing with a friend so you get practise at speaking to another person!
