IELTS
Preparation

  • For students preparing for the Academic or General IELTS exam who are aiming for a  Band Score from 5.0 to 7.5.

  • Lessons are customised to meet each student's needs in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, and academic Vocabulary and Grammar essential for IELTS. For example, if you require most improvement in Writing Task 2 - essay writing, then more lesson time and resources can be focused on Writing Task 2.

  • Strategies and skills are taught for how to approach each part of the IELTS exam so that you can maximise the use of the time available. This includes which writing task it's best to do first and how much time to spend planning for each writing task, the best order to approach the reading questions, and strategies for each of the reading and listening question types.

  • Writing tasks are prepared for and taught during the lessons, but the actual writing task is usually set for homework.  The completed writing is then sent by the student to the teacher before the next lesson. The teacher can then mark the writing homework and provide feedback effectively to the student during the lesson. There is no extra cost for the marking of Writing Task 1 or Writing Task 2 homework.

  • A range of IELTS materials and resources are available for students to borrow including Grammar Books, Listening Audios & Practice Tests.

Why do you need to study IELTS ?

  • Studying in New Zealand. Most university Bachelor degrees require a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS Academic with no skills less than 6.0. Other educational institutes such as technical institutes and private business schools usually have lower English entry requirements.

  • Registration with a professional body in New Zealand. Some examples are Nursing Registration and Early Childcare Education which require a minimum score of 7.0 in each academic module.

  • For many immigrants to New Zealand, the reason for studying  IELTS is to meet the Permanent Residency requirements for English. The requirement is an overall band score of 6.5 or greater in either the IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training test. Partners and dependents (children) usually require a minimum IELTS score of 5.0. Other visa categories have other IELTS requirements (usually lower).  There are also many exemptions to needing IELTS such as having a Bachelors degree taught in English.

  • IELTS study is a good way of improving your General English skills in Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading for work, social occasions and everyday life.

  • My job is to do everything I can to help you achieve the IELTS score you need. I'm always available to answer all students' questions via a messaging App or email.

  • We have a wide range of IELTS resources, both digital and hard copy, that we use in class, and students are also welcome to borrow them. These include Grammar Practice Exercises, Audio (digital and CDs) and the latest Practice Tests.

  • Although a timetable of IELTS lessons is agreed on with students, we offer a high degree of flexibility so that students can postpone and change lesson times if necessary due to sickness, work commitments or childcare requirements.

Structure of
IELTS Preparation Lessons

IELTS preparation lessons can be done face to face or online. Face to face lessons are usually 2 hours long, and online lessons are usually 1.5 hours. Students can do one lesson per week or as many as they like, subject to teacher availability. Lessons are private one to one lessons, but I can also teach two students with similar English levels and the same goals (for a lower price!)

As a guide, we recommend 30 hours of private lessons to move up 0.5 of a band, for example, if you currently have a 5.0 and need a 5.5 overall score. However, the number of lessons required will depend on the student's own motivation to study, do homework and practise English outside of class.  Some students have moved up a whole band (1.0) with far fewer than 30 hours of lessons, while others need more than 30 hours to move up half a band (0.5).

IELTS classes are sometimes run for 4 to 6 students.  These classes are only taught face to face and are held in the evenings over a 10-week period.
